Epidemiology

Much remains unknown about the prevalence of Asperger Syndrome and the environmental situations that may make a child more prone to having the disorder. However, it is diagnosed five times more often in males than in females, and having a close relative with the disorder also increases the chance of a child having AS. Despite the limited knowledge concerning influences on the disorder, it is clear that neither the type of upbringing nor the amount of affection from parents causes the syndrome in the child (DSM-IV-TR, 2000).
