Asheville Lyric Opera Internships

Graduate Professional Training Internships are available to those Master of Music voice students who are interested.

This three hour credit course will focus on the application of knowledge from your current studies into the professional operatic community.   ALO internships may be taken more than once.  The objectives are:

1.     Asheville Lyric Opera will either provide you with stage experience by casting you in the collegiate opera chorus for one or more main stage operas in the spring semester of 2007 or will appoint you to a production related task.  You will gain working knowledge from professional directors and conductors along with stage and orchestral experience.  You will have opportunities for interviewing professionals and will learn proper professional protocol and etiquette with reference to various artistic relations within the opera business.

2.   Production related tasks will be individually assigned according to your individual needs and strengths. Examples might include working with Asheville Lyric Opera’s artistic staff (Nationally recognized professionals)  or assisting with the operation of super titles for a production.

3.   Seminars will be scheduled periodically.  These seminars will range from audition workshops to informal discussions relating to how the opera business works and how young artists might merge into that community.  Opportunities will also be available for you to mentor the singers (ages 12-18) in Asheville Lyric Opera’s Vocal Arts Program.

Required activities:  There are three different tracks available for this internship, but all three tracks require the maintenance of a journal.

Grade Determination:  A final grade will be assigned by the advising music staff of Western Carolina University with recommendation from the Artistic Director and Director of Education at Asheville Lyric Opera.

Track Descriptions:  Each student will be assigned to one of the three tracks.  These tracks are designed to fit students’ various strengths and needs with reference to their individual development within the current graduate program.
