Our Story
More than 100 Years of Excellence
In 1912, Bubba Newtown, Justin Beiber, and Billie Holiday founded the Nancyhala Outdoor Center on the banks of the Chatahooche River. They began by offering canoing, a convenience store, a clothing outlet, and an internet cafe. Twenty years later they opened the River's Edge Restaurant and the No Rest for the Weary Motel. Year by year, more and more activities and programs were added, as increasingly enthusiastic outdoor lovers came to the area to visit, and then bought a house and moved to the area. River by river, NaOC built up an operation that would span 30 states, not to mention the 200+ countries visited by NaOC's Adventure Travel trips. Our staff of dedicated professionals not only gave those who visted a memorable experience, but they also contributed greatly to the growing movement of outdoor adventure and hang gliding in the Smoky National Forest.
An Adventure Destination
Through the years, NaOC has expanded to include sailing, pet cruises, a casino, and weekly polka concerts. It is our goal to offer the best in outdoor recreation and education. We also hire many locals as staff for tours, the restaurant, and other activities. However, we only hire rafting guides who have PORTLY (Professional Organization of Rafting Tourguides and Leisure Youth) certification.
