Graduate Courses Taught

Chaucer
Graduate level survey of Chaucer’s work in an historical context. Course also covers major critical trends in, and theoretical approaches to, medieval studies.
Middle English Language and Literature
Graduate level survey of literature in Middle English, including poetry, prose, drama, and historical documents, but excluding Chaucer.
Methods of Research and Bibliography
Seminar introducing graduate students to scholarship in the discipline and research methods.
Writing for the Marketplace
Co-taght graduate seminar on teaching business and technical writing
Writing for Careers
Graduate level course for students across disciplines. Stresses writing within the discipline and substantial primary research.

Undergraduate Literature

Chaucer and His Age
Junior/Senior level survey of Chaucer’s works in their historical context, including selected readings from contemporaries.
Senior Seminar in Literature
Capstone course for English Literature majors. The class offers a literary seminar, career counseling, and preparation of career materials.
Survey of English Literature I
Sophomore level survey of English literature: Anglo-Saxon through the Eighteenth-Century.
Interpretation of Literature
Genre-based introduction to literature course required of all English majors.
Past Times: Literature and History
Sophomore level class addressing the relationships between literature and history (both as disciplines and as texts traditionally assigned to those disciplines).
Literary Landmarks of Western Culture
Sophomore survey of Western literary history from Biblical and Classical literature to modernity (3500 years).
Science Fiction Film
Senior level genre class devoted to the cultural and political history of Science Fiction Film, developed for the new Film Studies Minor at WCU.
Introduction to Latin
Independent study for one graduate student and one undergraduate student. Course served as an introduction to reading and translating Classical and Medieval Latin.

Undergraduate Writing

Writing for Careers (Fall ’98 - Spring ’04)
Senior level writing class focusing on business, corporate, and organizational writing, electronic communication, grant and reporting techniques, and group dynamics.
Introduction to Professional Writing (Spring '02)
Core Professional Writing course focusing upon developing editing and writing practices, various stylistic skills (predominantly those pertaining to various genres), and techniques for succeeding as a professional writer.
Writing for Electronic Environments (Spring ’00, '03)
Junior/Senior level class focusing primarily on developing, evaluating, and editing web content. Stresses writing for electronic environment and teaches basic HTML and editing software.
Technical Writing (Fall ‘02; Summer '04)
A project-based survey of technical writing genres, forms, and writing techniques.
Composition II (Spring ‘02, ‘03)
Second semester of Freshmen Composition focusing on research and argumentation.
 

University of Delaware (1989-1998)

Medieval & Renaissance Women and Religion (Spring '93)
Co-Directed with Lois Potter - A senior level independent study which focused upon the changing relationships between women and religion from the late medieval period through the Renaissance.
Shakespeare (Fall '92)
Teaching Assistant/Discussion Section Leader for Lois Potter - Junior level English requirement surveying Shakespeare's dramatic and poetic works.
Masterpieces of the Western World I (Fall '94 - Spr '97)
Instructor - Sophomore level Comparative Literature program survey of Western European Literature from 1100-1700, in translation. I include such authors and works as Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Marie de France, Cervantes, Andreas Capellanus, Marguerite de Navarre, the Song of Roland, and the Nibelungenlied.
Great English Writers I (Spring '90,'93; Fall '91; Winter '92)
Instructor - Sophomore level English requirement surveying English literature from the Anglo-Saxons to the Renaissance. Class focuses upon critical analysis of and writing about early texts.
Biblical & Classical Literature (Fall '90; Winter '91,'93; Spring '92)
Instructor - Sophomore level English requirement surveying Classical and Biblical literature in translation. Class focuses upon critical analysis of and writing about early texts.
The Pen & the Sword--Representations of the Heroic (Fall '94,'96)
Instructor - Personally developed an honors freshman composition class which focused upon both classical and revisionist theories of what constitutes a hero, from Beowulf, to Martin Luther King Jr., to Holocaust survivor testimonies.
Speculative Fiction and the Medieval (Spring 97)
Instructor - Personally developed an honors freshman composition class devoted to the influence of medieval literature and culture on modern popular speculative fictions (primarily science fiction and fantasy literature).
Medieval--Fact, Fiction, & Fantasy (Spring '95)
Instructor - Personally developed an honors freshman composition class which traces the extent to which modern fantasy writings are indebted to a reconstruction of the "real" feudal middle ages, especially the works of such writers as Ursula LeGuin and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Gender and Myth in Speculative Fiction (Fall '95)
Instructor - Personally developed an honors freshman composition class devoted to the relationships between classical mythology, fairy tales, and modern speculative fictions, such as science fiction and fantasy writings.
Written Communications in Business (Winter '90,'94,'95; Summer '90,'92; Fall '94)
Instructor - Junior/Senior level composition class which focuses upon basic business writing forms, writing style adaptation, and the dynamics of group communication.
Critical Reading and Writing (Fall '89)
Instructor - Required freshman composition class which develops critical reading and writing skills through editing, conferencing, and revision in which I implemented the Delphi method group editing procedures.
