The Graduate Recital

The Graduate Recital consists of a public performance of representative literature no less than 50 minutes in length (excluding breaks and intermissions). The literature is to be chosen with guidance from the student's major professor and must be approved in advance by the student's graduate committee, no later than the first week of the semester of the performance.

Program Notes

Details of the literature to be performed and/or analysis of the literature performed must be in a form suitable to be included in the printed program and intelligible to a general audience. The length and focus of these program notes will be guided and specified by the major professor. These program notes are due to the committee members at the hearing. Failure to submit the program notes in the prescribed manner will result in the cancellation of the recital for that semester.

The Hearing

The pre-recital hearing must be performed at least two weeks before the recital date. Written program notes are due at the hearing (see above). All repertoire must be prepared for this hearing. The committee will hear selections of their choosing. There may be a question and answer period during which aspects of the performance or the program notes may be discussed. Questions regarding pedagogy, playing techniques, harmonic analysis, poetry, interpretation, etc., may be expected. The committee must pass the hearing by a majority vote. Failure to pass the hearing will result in the postponement of the recital one semester.
