SOPHOMORE
EXAM
During
the fourth semester of voice study (MUS 207) students must perform a Sophomore
Exam. This performance is the ÒbarrierÓ
to upper level voice study. This
performance consists of no less than 20 minutes of memorized music. The Sophomore Exam is traditionally
performed in its entirety during the jury time scheduled for that
semester. However, with faculty
permission, students may perform the sophomore examination in a public
performance. Public
performances of Sophomore Exams must be planned well in advance.
The
literature for this performance must contain French, German, Italian and
English languages and must reflect literature from the Baroque, Classical,
Romantic and 20th Century. One
selection must be an aria from an opera/oratorio.
This
performance is critical for all singers as it reflects the final check/evaluation
point prior to upper level study and final recitals. This performance is adjudicated and the faculty panel
renders judgment as to whether this student may continue on her/his study as a
voice major. This is also the performance which determines whether or not a student may
enter the BM Applied Concentration.
The
Junior Qualifying Examination is the only required performance for those
students enrolled in the BA - General and the BA Music Industry Programs.
