Homework – Short paper #2

I.      Using the library, the internet or any other source, write on the following scenario.  The length of your paper should be no less than 3 pages and no more than 4 pages double spaced.  Cite all sources and list them on an extra page (MLA format).  All references should be indicated in the body of your paper.  Reference information is available in the writing center at this web address:  http://www.wcu.edu/11732.asp

II.     Due Date:  Monday, April 26 at class time.  Late papers will be docked a letter grade for each day late.

III.   The Scenario:  You are a newly hired music teacher in your first job.  Congratulations!!!  This is a public high school, but you have been thrown a curve.  You are THE music teacher and have been asked to begin, the first ever, SATB choir.  ItŐs the first day of class.  You have a rehearsal prepared and music chosen for your 60 singers (30 girls and 30 boys), but it was an unmitigated disaster.  Half of your students seem unable to sing in tune.  You have correctly made an assumption that they are not tone deaf, but simply in the wrong voice part.  Voice testing is needed in order to determine which section is the best for their voices.

IV.    The assignment:  Prepare a lesson plan for Day 2 of your new job with the SATB choir.  Be sure your lesson plan addresses the following things:

1 -- At least two different methods of testing voices and assigning the right part

2-- Methods of classroom management so that your students stay engaged in the event of the day AND permit you to actually accomplish the necessary task.

3-- What are the advantages of these methods?  Why have you chosen these methods over other methods?

V.    Tip:  You may present as many methods and ideas for class management as you would like.

VI.   Grading method:  Your score for this assignment will be divided as listed here:

40%    Your methods of testing voices presented

      40%    Your class management ideas

      15%    Your citations

5%      Your organization of this paper
