Diagnosis

When you approach a doctor about your problems, the doctor will look to the DSM-IV-TR to help to form a diagnosis based upon your symptoms.
The DSM-IV-TR's diagnostic criteria for Schizoaffective Disorder are as follows:
Code: 290.70

A. An Uninterrupted period of illness during which, at some point, there is either a Major Depressive Episode, a Manic Episode, or a Mixed Episode concurrent with symptoms that meet Criterion A for Schizophrenia
(Criterion A for Schizophrenia - 2 or more of the following during a 1 month period)
1) delusions
2) hallucination
3) disorganized speech
4) grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
5) negative symptoms <i.e. affective flattening, etc.>

B. During the same period of illness, there have been delusions or hallucinations for at least 2 weeks in the absence of prominent mood symptoms.

C. Symptoms that meet criteria for a mood episode are present for a substantial portion of the total duration of the active and residual periods of the illness.

D. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition.

If you have witnessed any of the above symptoms, seek the attention of a Psychologist or Psychiatrist immediately.  Early awareness of the disorder is important towards the treatment.
