Revised 9/22/99                            Analysis of "Major League Baseball Salaries:
The Impacts of Arbitration and Free Agency"

Read this article (on reserve in the library), study it, and ready yourself for a discussion of the following aspects of the regression analyses in the assigned article.  Concentrate on the regression model and questions answered with regression analysis.  More specifically, concentrate on one or more regression coefficients that answer the question(s) raised in the article, when considering the coefficients.  You do not necessarily have to discuss every coefficient.

1. What question(s) does the article seek to answer with regression analysis?

2. What hypothesis or hypotheses about individual coefficients are offered as potential answers to the question(s).

3. What model is estimated using regression analysis?  Define the variables and describe the data.  Be specific, but concentrate on information related to #1 and #2.  (Incidently, visualizing the data set, number of observations and the nature of values for each observation, often facilitates interpretations and understanding of the work accomplished in the article.  Other times it will make problems apparent and point to future refinements.)

4. Interpret and evaluate the regression results.  What is the status of the hypotheses from #2 (can or cannot reject) and the subsequent answer to #1?  What is the estimated model and other statistics as well as your technical evaluation of this information.  Diagrams may be helpful.  Again, when discussing the coefficients, concentrate on the one or ones that answer the question(s) raised in the article.

5. Additional Comments
a. Are there other possible uses of the regression results or comments other than answering #1 and testing the hypotheses from #2?
b. Suggest problems yet to be overcome or possible improvements with the regression model.

6. Summarize and evaluate the overall impact of the article.  Include a statistical and conceptual evaluation and synopsis of the article.  Be sure to include the (1) question(s) raised in the article, (2) the answers to these questions provided by the article, (3) how the answers were obtained, (4) problems with the analysis, and (5) other possible uses of results and/or future research agendas to improve the answers.
