INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 3.

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

Download the SPSS data file assign3data.sav.  Open this file within SPSS.  You will notice that the file contains six variables: student, pretest, post-test, gender, practical, and education.  The variables prestest and posttest are the test scores on a written exam before and after viewing a training video on RSI.  The student variable is a unique student ID number assigned to each student.  Gender is a binary variable coded as 0 for female and 1 for male.  Practical is a binary variable for the practical exam that is coded as 0 for fail and 1 for pass. Education is coded as 0 for certificate, 1 for AAS degree, and 2 for BS degree.  Using these data, complete the assignments below.

A.     Using the paired (dependent) samples t test (we will assume the data are normally distributed and this test is permitted), determine if there was a true improvement in the test scores after watching the video, or if the observed improvement was merely the result of random sampling error.  Copy and paste your output into an e-mail by the due date.  IMPORTANT:  To receive full credit, you must include your interpretation of the output in your e-mail.  Undigested computer output will NOT be accepted.

B.     Using the Chi square test, determine if there was a true difference in the pass rates on the practical exam between  males and females, or if the observed difference was merely the result of random sampling error.  Remember that this is a 2x2 table and you will need to look to see if Yates correction or the Fisher’s exact test of Chi square is appropriate (see lecture on Chi square).  Copy and paste your output into an e-mail by the due date.  IMPORTANT:  To receive full credit, you must include your interpretation of the output in your e-mail.  Undigested computer output will NOT be accepted.

C.      Using the ANOVA test, determine if there was a true difference in the post-test scores between the certificate, AAS, and BS degree paramedics.  Include in your output the descriptives option under the statistics option button of ANOVA.  IMPORTANT:  To receive full credit, you must include your interpretation of the output in your e-mail.  Undigested computer output will NOT be accepted.
