Evaluation:

There will be 4 written unit tests during the semester, which will constitute 67% of the course grade. Quiz grade1. will constitute 16.7%. And a cumulative final written exam2. will constitute 16.7% of the course. (See formula below).

Quizzes.

You might consider the grading of and the type of quizzes in this course just plain WEIRD.

However, I think that this course’s weird quiz-system is worth it – and that this system will

facilitate your learning and retention.

So, let’s spend a little time explaining some of the how and why.

My teaching philosophy continues to evolve. My approach to teaching EMC courses continues to be altered by distance learners’ life-circumstances, learning styles, and performances in prior EMC courses.

There is some evidence that weekly quizzes help students to keep-up and to avoid attrition.

There are reasons for not leaving the weekly quizzes open indefinitely.

However, students like to be able to continue to review – thus the review quizzes. The unit review quizzes will have a different set of questions each time that you test yourself. [The WebCat program should keep “shuffling the deck”]. Each unit will have a summative quiz covering questions from each lecture in that unit (as well as an occasional prior unit question that needs re-emphasizing).

You can work on the review quizzes for the entire semester. You can work ahead on all weekly quizzes – but if you miss the deadline, you cannot revisit the weekly quizzes. (Under rare circumstances, weekly quiz deadlines may be re-opened. Requests to extend deadlines can reduce efficiency and impede your “staying involved in the course.”  Therefore, a request to re-open a weekly quiz should: (1) give an explanation; (2) be written [WebCat mail].

Quiz deadlines.

So to review, please note the deadlines vary depending upon whether the quiz is a weekly quiz or a review quiz.

Each weekly practice quiz will be due by 11:00 pm, each Sunday night.

On the other hand, your review quizzes have NO deadline other than the end of the semester.

All (4) review quizzes will all be due by 11:00 pm, the night before the final.

1. Quiz scoring.

On the weekly quizzes, you’ll have two attempts; your score(s) will be averaged.

On the review quizzes, you’ll have unlimited attempts; your review quiz score(s) will not be averaged – but rather, your highest attempt will be recorded (a sort of unlimited redemption).

The review quizzes may be  weighted more heavily than the weekly quizzes [ the  designations of quiz point totals will show you their relative weights]

Your final quiz grade will be calculated by combining your weekly quiz score [10 points each] with your review quiz scores [50 points each].

2. Final Exam

Because the final is comprehensive, it may be a better reflection of what you have retained from the course. Therefore, I reserve the option of counting the final for greater than 16.7% if it would be to the student’s advantage.

Grading formula :

                unit 1                      Written  # 1           Newborn [NRP]        (16.7%)

                unit 2                      Written  # 2           Ob - 1                          (16.7%)

                unit 3                      Written  # 3           Ob - 2                          (16.7%)

                unit 4                      Written  # 4           Peds.                            (16.7%)

                Quizzes                                                                                       (16.7%)

                Final                       Written  # 5           cumulative                 (>16.7%)

Final grades will be based on the following scale:

                >   92. 49%            =              A

                >   84. 49%            =              B

                >   76. 49%            =              C

                 >  69. 49%            =              D

                <   69. 50%            =              F

A score of > 76.5%  is expected in order to demonstrate

minimal level of mastery of the EMC curriculum

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities:

Western Carolina University is committed to providing equal educational opportunities for students with documented disabilities.  Students who require disability services or reasonable accommodations must identify themselves as having a disability and provide current diagnostic documentation to Disability Services.  All information is confidential.  Please contact Disability Services for more information at (828) 227-2716 or 144 Killian Annex. Requests for reasonable accommodations should be presented to the instructor as early in the semester as possible

Academic Honesty

In accordance with the academic honesty policy presented in the Western Carolina University student handbook, you should presently be notified that the consequence of your failure to adhere to this honesty policy will result in a grade of F for the course.

NB: academic dishonesty includes knowingly allowing someone else to cheat.

Sexual Harassment

Western Carolina University adheres to statutes and ethical principles regarding sexual harassment.  If ever there is any inappropriate or unwelcomed behavior that is of a sexual nature, on the part of the instructor or peers, it should be attended to and it should cease. This may require effective communication and may utilize a system for registering a complaint with faculty, department head, +/or a liaison person.  Students should have a familiarity with and understanding of this policy and of the grievance procedures for individual action.  Actions may be in the manner of a formal complaint procedure or in the manner of informal assistance.  Students should also be aware of the availability in Health Sciences of a liaison person with whom grievances can be initially discussed.

Professional Behavior / Internet Etiquette

The EMC program adheres to standards and ethical principles of the health professions. Any on-line classroom communication or behavior that is racially, ethnically, religiously, sexually or otherwise prejudiced will not be tolerated in this course. Unprofessional prejudiced slurs or conversations may be an indication for the need for psychological and career counseling. They may also be evidence used for course dismissal of an uncontrite student.

Catamount Mail FAQs

How do I access Catamount Mail?

·    Log into My Cat and click on the Catamount Mail Tab.

I have another email address... do I have to check Catamount Mail?

·    It’s your responsibility, as no one can force you to check your Catamount Mail

address. However, Catamount Mail is the official communication method for

university/student communications including messages concerning notifications

and alerts as well as course information from instructors. This is to ensure you

get important personal messages.

Can I forward Catamount Mail to another address?

·    Catamount Mail is the official communication method for university/student

communications including messages concerning notifications and alerts. Due to

increased security measures and our commitment to guarantee email delivery

from any @email.wcu.edu address, students are not able to forward their

Catamount Email to another address.

I clicked on the Catamount Mail tab, IE says “Done” but nothing happened. Why?

·    Your account is initialized the first time you access Catamount Mail.

Unfortunately this may take a few seconds. Even thought IE says “Done” please

give it a few seconds longer to load the initial page.

Safari on my Mac is having problems accessing Catamount Mail. Is there a problem?

·    Unfortunately, Catamount Mail uses a Microsoft infrastructure that is not

completely Mac friendly. Switching to Firefox on the Mac resolves the access

issues.

What happens the first time I use Catamount Mail?

·    Your account must undergo an initialization process when first access. You will

not have to repeat these steps. Complete the prompts to use Catamount Mail.

Instructions are available at http://www.wcu.edu/it/catamountmail/

Do I need a separate Username and PIN for Catamount Mail?

·    Your Catamount Mail is automatically synced with your My Cat log in

information. No additional username or password is necessary after completing

the initial setup sets.

If I change the My Cat PIN do I need to change anything in Catamount Mail?

·    No changes are necessary. Catamount Mail access is connected to your My Cat account. Password changes are automatically shared between My Cat and Catamount Mail.

My name is not displayed as part of the mail page greeting, instead I get an !.. What’s wrong?

·    Hey, nobody’s perfect! This is a known error with Catamount Mail and

Microsoft. We’re working on it! This error will not impact any mail

functionality.

Not often, but sometimes when I use Catamount Mail I am prompted with a box with letters and am asked to enter those. What’s going on?

·    This is a good thing as it is a protection against SPAM. It’s  Catamount Mail’s

way of ensuring that your current session is a legitimate use of the email system.

It’s a hassle having to enter the letters but well worth the time considering all the

SPAM and viruses the system is blocking on your behalf.
