Dissertation: Femme Sole' And Mercantile Writing In Late Medieval England. Committee: James M. Dean (director), University of Delaware; Mark Amsler,University of Delaware; Judith Roof, Indiana University; Paul Strohm, then of Indiana University, now J.R.R. Tolkien Professor of English Language and Literature, Oxford University.

This dissertation argues for a developing social discourse surrounding mercantile activity and for a textual environment which reflects a growing anxiety over the increased role of women, especially wives, in the merchant community. It juxtaposes literary texts, such as The Canterbury Tales and The Book of Margery Kempe, with historical documents, such as the Westminster Chronicle, the Liber Albus, the Paston Letters, the Rotuli Parliamentorum, and various wills, guild ordinances and records.
