MODULE ONE PROBLEMS

Note:  Show all calculations, and answers in red.  Underline the final answer, and reference any sources used for material specifications.  Make sketches to assist in working problems.

1An 1800 pound load is supported by a 5/8 inch diameter eyebolt (loaded in tension).  Find the stress in the straight section of the bolt.

2A round AISI 1018 steel rod is 10 inches long with a diameter of .505 inches.  If the rod elongates by .0215 inches while being subjected to a tensile load of 12,500 lb. what is the modulus of elasticity for this rod?

3.  Determine if rod in problem 2 has been loaded beyond its yield point.  (Hint:  check the Matweb link on the resources page and look up the yield strength for AISI 1018)

4Determine the shear shear strength for 6061-T6 aluminum.   Explain how you arrived at this value.

5.  Determine the modulus of elasticity for the following materials and rank order from highest to lowest:
      *Gray Cast Iron-ASTM A48 Grade 20  *302 Stainless Steel-Annealed Bar  *Nylon 6 - Unmodified
      *2024 T-4 Aluminum  *AISI 1144 Steel-Normalized @900 Degrees C, Air Cooled

6.  Ten inch diameter blanks are to be made by shearing in a standard punch and die.  The material selected is 1/8 inch plate, AISI-1015, which is a plain carbon steel.  What size press with respect to force (in tons) would be required?  Assume 100 % design factor and the shear strength is 45,000 psi.

7.  A shaft from a hydraulic motor is coupled to a 10 inch rolling drum for processing paper.  A load of 1000 lb. is applied to the outer diameter of the drum..  The shaft is .75 inches in diameter. Find the torsional shear stress in the shaft.   If the shaft is made of AISI 1040 cold drawn steel, will the shaft be able to withstand the torque?  Explain.

8A machine tool weighing 200,000 lb. is supported by 4 - 3 x 3 inch steel legs equally loaded.   The legs rest on 1/4 inch plate 6x6 inch square steel pads  A separate concrete pad 4 x 8 feet supports the table to reduce vibration.  Determine the stress in the legs, and the bearing stress on the concrete.

9.  If an aluminum round bar, 6 inches long is to be used for a thermal switch in an industrial heat setting operation. The air gap  (deformation range ) is  1/16 inch.  What is the temperature range of the switch?

10.  Two construction workers are asked to find the "exact"  location of the corners of a 200 foot long building.  A 200 ft. measuring tape (with cross-sectional area = .005625 in.) is stretched out between the two points.  However the workers are ready to get out of the sweltering heat and head for lunch..  During lunch break, the tape is heated to 150 degrees.  While measuring the length the workers apply a 25 lb. tensile force to the 200 ft. measuring tape.   How much error will occur is the measurement is taken again the next week and the temperature is only 60 degrees?
