Bio   ENGR365 Travel   Kilobots   Research   Awards   Publications   Students   Teaching & Advising   Services

I was born in China, and I obtained my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China.

My M.S. project was a collaboration between Harbin Institute of Technology and Osaka Kyoiku University, Japan, and I lived in Nara (an old capital city located between Osaka and Kyoto) when I worked on my M.S. thesis.

I then went to Syracuse University to pursue my Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering. Before I obtained the Ph.D. degree, I obtained a M.S. degree in Applied Statistics, too.

I worked at ARCON Corp. in Boston for three years before I joined Western Carolina University as an assistant professor in Fall 2013.

Curriculum Vitae

Do you want to explore other cultures and experience the cultural effects on engineering practices?

Join the travel course, ENGR 365 Global Engineering and Technology. In summer 2018, our destinations are Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Chengdu in China. The travel is updated to be from May 15 to May 29, 2018. Detailed course information, application procedure, estimated costs, temporarory itinerary, FAQ, and info for both you and your family and friends, are provided at yan.wcu.edu/engr365.

Do you want to build Kilobots yourselves?

We built them! Follow us with all the resources freely available at kilobot.wcu.edu. We will also keep updating our projects there.

Research

My research interests are as follows:
  • Swarm robotics and swarm intelligence (such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO))
  • Prognostics and diagnostics, such as in wind energy systems
  • Statistical signal processing, applied in detection and estimation, tracking, fusion, wireless communications, and pattern recognition
  • Engineering education
