Music Major final semester grades are based on the following percentages:
Weekly Lesson Grade 50%
Mid Term Scale Test 10%
Final Scale Test 10%
Studio Recital Performance 10%
End of Semester Jury 20%
(A) Each music major is eligible for one 50 minute lesson and one 50 minute principals class each week of a semester. Lesson times will be posted on the instructor's door during the first week of classes (Rm 461 Coulter). The principal class meeting will always be on Wednesday from 2:30-3:20 in Room 358, or else in the instructor's office (Rm. 461). Weekly lesson grades are given based on the instructor's observations of progress gained in the areas of etudes, transposition, solos, and scale prepartation. Each student's weekly lesson grade will also reflect the completion of a practice log, a practice session recording, and written comments about listening to 2 trumpet CDs, which will be presented in each lesson. Also figured into the weekly lesson grade percentage are any other assignments deemed necessary by the applied instructor. Students are required to practice a minimum of 1 1/2 hours PER DAY outside of ensemble rehearsals (10 1/2 hours per week minimum). Each student will be given an assignment sheet at each lesson. The student MUST bring this sheet to the next lesson.
(B) A scale exam will be given at mid term and the final lesson of each semester. All scales and arpeggios are to be performed exactly as indicated on the trumpet studio scale sheet handout given at the first lesson. Scales and arpeggios will be performed with a metronome and by memory during lessons and at the testing. Metronome markings are left to the instructor's disretion.
First Semester
All major scales and arpeggios
Second Semester
All major scales and arpeggios
All harmonic minor scales and arpeggios
Third Semester
All major scales and arpeggios
All harmonic minor scales and arpeggios
All melodic minor scales
Fourth Semester
All major scales and arpeggios
All harmonic minor scales and arpeggios
All melodic minor scales
F# and G whole tone scales
(C) Graded test based on definitions assigned by the instructor may substitute for 5% of mid term scale test.
(D) Students must perform once on a the Trumpet Studio Recital, a student recital, formal recital, or if the instructor assigns, in a master class setting. If a student performs in a master class setting, the situation will mirror a public performance as closely as possible. You will need approximately $30-50 EACH semester for accompanist fees. This fee will cover 2-3 rehearsals and a performance with a WCU Faculty pianist. This is a GREAT deal as most accompanists would easily charge 5X this price. Your accompanist will need to be paid BEFORE the performance. Failing to pay your accompanist will result in an incomplete ("I") grade on your transcript until the bill is paid.
(E) All trumpet students, with the exception of minors, signed up for lessons, must perform a jury or qualifying exam at the end of each semester (20% of final grade).
(F) All trumpet students must pay for their own accompanist for every performance. The accompanist must be payed before the performance, or they will have the option of not playing for you. Any exceptions must be agreed upon by the accompanist before the performance. If the accompanist is not paid by the end of the last day of classes, the student will receive an incomplete "I" on their transcript until the problem is rectified.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
ALL TRUMPET MAJORS ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRESENT AT ALL SCHEDULED CLASS MEETINGS AND AT ALL TRUMPET RELATED EVENTS, RECITAL PERFORMANCES OF FELLOW TRUMPET STUDENTS, AND THEIR INSTRUCTOR. Most trumpet events can be found on the link from the WCU Trumpet Studio webpage, which can be found at: www.ulrichmusic.com
IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT FROM PRINCIPALS CLASS OR ANY PERFORMANCE MENTIONED ABOVE, ONE LETTER GRADE WILL BE SUBTRACTED FOR EACH ABSENCE.
Freshmen must attend the warm-up session set up by the instructor at the beginning of either the Fall or Spring Semester. This session will last 2-3 weeks, time TBA the first week of classes.
Excused absences will only be accepted in advance of the class meeting, except in the case of emergencies (accident, death in family, extreme sickness). In the event of an EXCUSED absence from a lesson, a make-up lesson MIGHT be given at the instructor's discretion. Lessons missed by the instructor for school related business MIGHT be made up at the instructor's discretion.
In order to be qualified for the maximum grade of "A", the student must have attended at least 12 lessons in the semester. To be qualified to receive a "B", the student must have attended 11 lessons in the semester. To be qualified to receive a "C", the student must have attended 10 lessons in the semester. To be qualified to receive a "D", the student must have attended 9 lessons in the semester. ANY STUDENT ATTENDING LESS THAN 9 LESSONS IN A GIVEN SEMESTER WILL FAIL THE COURSE.
*****Make up lessons, if given by the instructor, will ONLY be given in the week following the missed lesson.
SUBJECTIVITY CLAUSE
A portion of the student's grade may be lowered based on attitude in lessons and principals class. Excessive tardiness, sleeping in class, texting or talking on cell phone, listening to mp3 players, disrupting class, or lack of effort, are examples of items that can effect the grade.
Please look online at www.wcu.edu to find the last date from which to withdraw from this course and receive a "W" on your transcript.
