FINAL EXAM DETAILS:

Most of you chose to do a project in lieu of a final exam.  Three of you chose to write an essay exam.  Everyone should bring their final project or exam to the scheduled final exam on Wednesday, December 13, at noon, in the regular classroom.  The time allocated is from 12:00 to 2:30.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PROJECTS:

If you are making a children's book, look at some children's books for the proper way to make your copyright page that contains all the author, illustrator and reference information.

If you are making a book, game, or other project, type up a reference list for the references you use. Whatever your project is, you must tie it in to class topics, issues and themes.

PRESENTATIONS:

Plan to read your book, play your game or discuss your answers on the essay exam.

Bring any missing work to my department office, Killian #250.

See you Wednesday!

Reinventing American Education

for Now and the Future

The 2005 Education Commission of the States

You are a member of an important commission that has been chartered by the President of the United States.  Your mission is to make recommendations to reinvent American education.  You are meeting in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, and the first capital of the United States.

The current emphasis on testing is now considered misguided. The states have a huge stake in their students passing the tests so they can get the federal funds promised by NCLB.  But the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) education law is now widely seen as a failure.  The states have ‘dumbed down’ their tests to raise their passing rates, but when the students take a national test (NAEP), the results are dismal.  For example, 87% of Tennessee eighth graders passed the state math test, but only 21% passed the national test.

You are to address the commission as if you are the character you have selected.  Get together with the other person who has the same character, and together, develop a set of aims and recommendations to reinvent American education.

Develop 5 aims or goals of American Education for Now and the Future

Develop 3 recommendations for reinventing American Education for Now and the Future
