Generate Ideas for Making K-12 Connections to the Project
Curriculum Plans & Projects
In making unit or lesson plans, what are some considerations?
Format (Samples on MJHerzog website - eg., Lesson plan format)
Sample lesson plans on Handmade in America, LearnNC
Universal Design A curriculum plan that intentionally includes all learners.
Examples of ideas that could be used for high school and adapted for middle school:
Kris Bates, 8th Grade Math teacher, Cullowhee Valley School.
Integrate math with making quilts, especially using geometric shapes, angles, etc.
Dawn Gilchrist Young, English teacher, Swain County High School.
1. Integrate art, English, and history by having students study the website and choose one of the project artifacts to use as the basis for a project. Research the process by which the artifact was created (materials, dyes, preparation, etc.), write about that process for a history class, recreate the product for an art class, and write about the process and the result for an English class.
2. Do Foxfire style interviews with older local people. Begin by showing them the artifacts (or photos of the website's artifacts) from the website and finding out which are familiar and which were used by them. Write up the interviews and present, or bring in the interviewees and have them talk to a class.
