The MAT Internship is a full-time, one-semester commitment.  The intern is placed in a school with a cooperating teacher who has agreed to serve as host for the experience.  The exact dates for beginning and ending the internship will be worked out with the intern, the cooperating teacher and the WCU supervisor.  Ideally, the intern will know the placement in advance and will be able to spend some time observing the cooperating teacher and other teachers in the same school prior to beginning.

The intern must make written lesson plans, one week in advance, for every week of teaching.  Other responsibilities are listed on the internship information packet.

This application and a resume are due to Dr. Herzog, Killian 250, by the following dates:

Register for Internship - The new BANNER system at WCU has created problems for students registering for their internship.  At this time, you may have difficulty registering for more than one section.  If so, contact Dr. Jacque Jacobs and she will be able to override the system glitch.  Hopefully, this problem will be resolved soon.

You will want to register for EDCI 689 for 3, 6 or 9 semester hours, depending on how many credits you need.  Six credit hours allows students to be eligible for financial aid.  Nine credit hours is considered regular full-time.  Regardless of how many internship hours you enroll in, all MAT interns must participate in an on-line discussion group.

Semester/year for internship to take place:

The MAT internship generally should occur during the last semester of the program, or when the student is nearing the end of the MAT program and has completed all or most of the coursework.  (Lateral-entry teachers may be on an individualized timetable.)  The MAT internship requires a semester-long commitment in the appropriate grade level and subject.  To take the internship, students should enroll in at least two sections of internship.   Interns must enroll in the online internship support course and participate in required components, including discussions, postings, etc.  The online internship support course provides a support system, teaching resources, and help with working through the MAT portfolio.
