Strategies for
Creating Effective Classroom Management and
Dealing with Behavior Issues
See Kellough text, Module 3, including the exercises for an excellent overview of classroom management strategies.
Look at the various theories:
B.F. Skinner – Behaviorism
Canters – Assertive Discipline
Dreikurs - Logical Consequences
Albert (& Dreikurs) – Cooperative Discipline
Glasser – Reality Therapy; Control theory
Ginott – Communication Model
Gordon – Teacher Effectiveness Theory
Kounin – Ripple Effect, Withitness (This is very revealing and helpful.)
There’s a bibliographic website on these and other theories.
Also, starting p. 77. The entire section “There are success stories” has some food for thought. Look at suggestions and discussion of how to Redirect Student Behavior using non-verbal gestures, body language, etc. Think of how indirect interventions may be more useful and effective than direct confrontations. Look at the suggested “order of behavior intervention strategies” (p. 78) also for good suggestions.
It is interesting to think about the ways in which teachers can (inadvertently) cause or contribute to student behavior problems (p.78 – 80).
Finally, there are 50 tips on avoiding mistakes.
The Harry Wong text and the Breaux text contain good behavior management suggestions.
