HPPD is an extremely rare disorder, and according to Dr. H.D. Abraham (2008) the patient is often aware of the diagnoses before the clinician.  In addition to its rarity, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and ophthamologists do not typically encounter HPPD during training.  Unfortunately, these are the specialists HPPD patients generally seek advice from.  Patients typically have to consult an average of medical specialists before one is able to diagnose the condition correctly.  For some this is problematic because clinicians commonly mistake HPPD for some type of psychotic illness, and thus provide the incorrect treatment for these individuals.
