The Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine was established in February of 2007 in Burke County, NC. It serves as a regional resource to southern Appalachian states, dedicated to promoting quality medical care in limited resource (“wilderness”) environments.

The intent of the Center is to promote collaboration in wilderness medicine and to address unmet needs in this region, not to compete with already existing services. We serve as a nexus for regional wilderness-medicine oriented institutions, agencies, and individuals. We are building a program which includes field and classroom seminars, conferences, certification courses, networking/intercommunication, consultation services, research and other activities.

The Center currently consists of a Board of Directors and a Steering Committee. Individuals on these bodies are drawn from a diverse set of backgrounds, including risk management lawyers, wilderness medicine specialists and teachers, wilderness EMS specialists, paramedics, hospital administrators, university professors, researchers, emergency physicians, orthopedic and trauma surgeons, wilderness school professionals, non-profit organizers, and many others. The Center includes leaders from Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Winston-Salem), NC Outward Bound School (Asheville), Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte), Burke County EMS Special Operations Team and Blue Ridge HealthCare (Morganton), NC State University (Raleigh), Landmark Learning (Sylva), Western Carolina University (Cullowhee), and others. We continue to rapidly grow in order to truly represent the wilderness medicine community of the southern Appalachians.
