Summer 2007 - Spring 2008

The Western Carolina University Athletic Training Program was granted initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education on July 28, 2007. 

Senior, Adam Graham completed a 2007 summer internship at the Pittsburgh Pirates Complex in Bradenton, Florida. 

Junior, Brandon Auton completed a 2007 summer internship with the Hickory Crawdads Baseball Club (A Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates).

 

Summer 2006 - Spring 2007

The Western Carolina University Athletic Training Education Program graduated its first class on May 5, 2007. 
Jill Manners, Coordinator of Clinical Education, was named the winner of the 2006-2007 College of Applied Sciences Board of Governor's Innovative Teaching Award.  
Athletic Training Program Director, James Scifers was named the winner of the 2006-2007 College of Applied Sciences Faculty Scholar Award for excellence in research and scholarly activity. 
Jill Manners, Coordinator of Clinical Education, was named the winner of the 2006-2007 College of Applied Sciences Faculty Student Engagement Award.  
Western Carolina University faculty members Burt Ogle (Environmental Health) and James Scifers (Athletic Training) completed a platform presentation titled "Environmental Health Issues: A Focus for the Athletic Trainer" at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium. 
Western Carolina University Clinical Coordinator, Jill Manners, and former Head Athletic Trainer, Grady Hardeman, collaborated to present a clinical case study titled "Multi-Ligament Knee Injury with Associated Fibular Nerve Injury in a Collegiate Football Player" at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium. 
Doug Branch, a Clinical Instructor for the Athletic Training Education Program, presented a clinical case study, titled "Tibial Pain in an Adult Male Distance Runner" at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Virginia Beach, VA.

Junior, Tammy Jones presented a clinical case study, titled "Chronic Buttock and Spine Pain in a Female Collegiate Soccer Player" at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Virginia Beach. 
Junior, Katlyn Joyner presented a clinical case study, titled "Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction in a College Female" at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Virginia Beach.

2007 Western Carolina University Award winners included Carlyle Schomberg (Sports Medicine Person of the Year), Patty Fahringer (Outstanding Clinical Instructor), Dustin Harward (Most Improved Clinical Instructor) & Lynette Mount and Troy Coppus (Outstanding New Clinical Instructors). 
Sophomore, Susan Hays was awarded the 2007 Carolina West Sports Medicine Athletic Training Scholarship at the 2007 WCU Athletic Training Banquet.
Junior, Katlyn Joyner was awarded the 2007 Southeastern Sports Medicine / Southeastern Fitness & Rehabilitation Athletic Training Scholarship at the 2007 WCU Athletic Training Banquet.
Senior, Ryan Holleman was awarded the 2007 Western Carolina University Athletic Training Education Program Faculty Scholarship at the 2007 WCU Athletic Training Banquet.

Junior, Katlyn Joyner became only the second undergraduate student to ever complete a platform presentation at the Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium.  Katlyn's presentation was titled "Lower Right Quadrant Pain in a College Female".

Senior, Amanda Cope, presented her original research study, titled "The Effect of Stretching, Traditional Continuous and Hands-Free Continuous Ultrasound on Hamstring Muscle Flexibility" at the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Nashville, TN.   
Sophomore, Mary Bryson Sophomore, Mary Bryson presented a clinical case study, titled "Unusual Stress Injuries in an Adolescent Female Softball Pitcher" at the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Nashville, TN.   
Lori Hill, a graduate of the Western Carolina Master of Health Science Program, presented her original research titled "Variations in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Laxity in Females as Determined by KT-1000 Testing during the Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle" at the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Nashville, TN.   
Junior, Katlyn Joyner was one of ten undergraduate students selected to present a case study at the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Student Symposium.  Katlyn's abstract titled "Lower Right Quadrant Pain in College Female" was selected for poster presentation. 
Fifteen Western Carolina University Athletic Training students attended the 2007 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Student Symposium held in Atlanta on February 9th & 10th. 
Junior, Tammy Jones was named to the TIAA-CREF Fall All- Academic Team for the third consecutive year.  Tammy, a senior on the field, competes for the Catamount Women's Soccer Team in addition to double-majoring in Athletic Training and Criminal Justice. 
The Western Athletic Training Association and the Western Carolina University Nutrition Club organized the Second Annual Health Sciences Food Drive to collect canned goods for less fortunate individuals in Western North Carolina.  The Food Drive netted over 1000 food items which were donated to The Community Table in Sylva.  
The Western Athletic Training Association participated in  the Operation Christmas Child project to collect and distribute Christmas boxes to children across the country. 
The Western Athletic Training Association participated in this year's "Trick of Treat for UNICEF" to raise funds for needy children around the world. 
Senior, Heather Barnard was selected for recognition in The National Dean's List as a result of her outstanding academic performance during the 2005-2006 academic year. 
Sophomore, Mary Bryson was awarded five scholarships this past summer.  The scholarships included: the Virgie Cox Memorial Scholarship, the Richard Coles Evans Memorial Scholarship, the Courtney M. Burgess Memorial Fund Scholarship, the Manteo Rock Fish Rotary Scholarship, and the Western Carolina University Excellence Award.  Each of these awards was given based on Mary's academic achievement and community involvement during the 2005-2006 academic year. 
Fourteen Western Carolina University Athletic Training students traveled to Lexington, KY to assist in providing Medical Services during the 2006 Bluegrass State Games in July.

Summer 2005 - Spring 2006

Western Carolina University joined Cal State-Fullerton, Slippery Rock University, Springfield College & the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as one of only five programs nationally to be awarded two NATA undergraduate scholarships. 
Juniors, Amanda Cope & Emily Mikeal received their National Athletic Trainers' Association Undergraduate Scholarships during the 2006 Athletic Training Student Awards Luncheon at the 2006 NATA Annual Meeting in Atlanta. 
Junior, Amanda Roach presented a clinical case study, titled "Congenital Horner's Syndrome in a Collegiate Baseball Player" at the 2006 National Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Atlanta, GA. 
Junior, Amanda Roach was named the winner of the 2006 Western Carolina University Alumni Association Scholarship.  This is the inaugural year for this scholarship at WCU.  Read more about Amanda's scholarship here.
Juniors, Rebecca Edwards & Lindsey Pearson presented a clinical case study, titled "Tibial Plateau Fracture with a MCL Tear and Hamstring Avulsion in a Male Collegiate Football Player" at the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Virginia Beach.   
Junior, Carey Ann Johnston presented a clinical case study, titled "Bilateral Hernia Repairs in a Collegiate Baseball Player" at the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Virginia Beach.

Junior, Heather Barnard was selected for recognition in The National Dean's List as a result of her outstanding academic performance during the 2005-2006 academic year. 
Junior, Amanda Cope was selected as a 2006 winner of a National Athletic Trainers' Association Undergraduate Scholarship.  Cope and classmate, Emily Mikeal were the only NATA undergraduate scholarship winners in District 3 (MD, VA, NC, SC, WV and DC). 
Junior, Emily Mikeal was selected as a 2006 winner of a National Athletic Trainers' Association Undergraduate Scholarship. 
Junior, Ryan Holleman was selected as 2006 recipient of a North Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association Scholarship. 
Junior, Amanda Cope was selected as 2006 recipient of a North Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association Scholarship. 
The Western Carolina University Athletic Training Education Program received the Catamount Community Service Award at the 2006 WCU Athletics Banquet.  This award is given to the athletic team or group that provides the greatest number of hours of community service during the academic year. 
James Scifers, Program Director of the Athletic Training Education Program was selected as the 2006 Western Carolina University Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award Winner.  This award is presented annually to the University's top professor as selected by faculty and students. 
Athletic Training Program Director, James Scifers was named the winner of the 2005-2006 College of Applied Sciences Faculty Student Engagement Award. 
  Lori Hill presented her original research titled "Variations in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Laxity in Females as Determined by KT-1000 Testing during the Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle" at the 2006 Graduate Research Symposium.

Junior, Lindsey Pearson was awarded the 2006 Ernest C. McCracken Memorial Scholarship for academic achievement. 
Junior, Amanda Cope was awarded the 2006 Western Carolina University Women's Leadership Scholarship.

Five Western Carolina University students attended and presented at the 2006 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Symposium in Atlanta, GA, March 30-April 2, 2006. 

Western Carolina University's six poster presentations at the 2006 National Conference for Undergraduate Research were the most of any Athletic Training Education Program in the country.

Western Carolina University was the only program in the country to be selected to present more than one case studies at the 2006 SEATA Student Symposium.  The meeting is the nation's largest student conclave, attracting more than 500 participants from all over the United States.  Read NATA News Article about Student SEATA

Junior, Ryan Holleman was also selected to present a case study at the 2006 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Student Symposium.  Ryan's abstract was awarded second place in the Clinical Case Report Competition. 

Junior, Amanda Roach was one of only four  students selected to give a presentation at the 2006 Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association Student Symposium.  Amanda's abstract was awarded third place in the Clinical Case Report Competition. 

The following Athletic Training students were named to the WCU Dean's List following the fall 2005 semester:  Andy Bethea, Colin Covelli and Lindsey Pearson. 
Junior, Emily Mikeal was selected for induction to the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society as a result of her outstanding academic achievement.   

Junior, Amanda Roach completed a poster presentation entitled "Congenital Horner's Syndrome in a Collegiate Baseball Player"  at the 2006 Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association Meeting in Philadelphia.  Amanda's poster was one of two WCU presentations at the conference. 

Five WCU Athletic Training Students attended the 2006 Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association Meeting in Philadelphia, PA in January. 

The Western Athletic Training Association organized the First Annual Health Sciences Food Drive to collect canned goods for less fortunate individuals in Western North Carolina.  The Food Drive netted over 300 food items which were donated to The Community Table in Sylva. 

Seven athletic training students volunteered their services at the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships for the Half Marathon held in Spartanburg, SC in November.

A dozen Western Carolina University Athletic Training students traveled to Lexington, KY to assist in providing Medical Services during the 2005 Bluegrass State Games in July.  The students are pictured at the Louisville Slugger Factory after touring the facility. 
Sophomore, Chris McCurry completed a summer internship as an athletic training student touring with The Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps.  During this unique educational experience Chris was responsible for assisting in the care of over 120 entertainers.  His internship took him to twenty-six different states while traveling in excess of 20,000 miles.   
Juniors Amanda Cope & Amelia Upright were featured in an article in the July 2005 edition of the NATA News, the monthly magazine of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.  Read the article here.

Summer 2004 - Spring 2005

Congratulations to Graduate Assistants Mark Mancebo & Lisa Shook who completed the Master of Health Science program and graduated from WCU this May.

Head Athletic Trainer, Grady Hardeman was an invited speaker at the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Meeting.  His presentation was entitled "MRSA: Prevention, Early Recognition & Treatment".
Nine WCU Athletic Training Students attended the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Meeting in Virginia Beach in May of 2005. 
Mark Mancebo presents his research entitled "The Effect of Ankle Taping and Ankle Bracing on Vertical Jump Height" at the 2005 Graduate Research Symposium.
Lisa Shook presents her research entitled "The Effects of Shoe Type on Lower Leg Injuries in Collegiate Distance Runners" at the 2005 Graduate Research Symposium.
Approximately 20 WCU Athletic Training students volunteered their services at the 2005 SOCON Track & Field Championships held in Cullowhee in May.

Sophomore, Chris McCurry completed a second season as an intern with the Asheville Altitude Professional Basketball Team of the National Basketball Development League.  Chris enjoyed the unique opportunity of being a part of back-to-back league championships during his two years with the club.

Thirteen WCU Athletic Training Students attended the 2005 North Carolina State Meeting in Charlotte.  The students are picture with NATA President Chuck Kimmel. 
Seven WCU students volunteered their athletic training services at the 2005 North Carolina High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships held in Winston-Salem in March.
WCU Athletic Training Students celebrated National Athletic Training Month by setting up an information booth in the WCU Commons and by preparing a Public Services Announcement for Radio & Television Broadcast in Cullowhee.
More than a dozen WCU Athletic Training students volunteered at the Jackson County Special Olympics in March of 2005.
