Philosophy
The Intramural Sports Program offered at Western Carolina University
is a division in The Division of Student Affairs. Intramurals provide ample opportunities
for voluntary participation for all members of the university community which includes
students, faculty and staff. A wide variety of sports are offered to meet the different
needs of all academic community. WCU's program includes team and individual sports
activities for both male, female and co-recreational activities.
Each individual participating assumes responsibility for his or her
health. It is recommended that a person who has not had a physical exam with-in
the past year be examined by a physician prior to participating. Each participant
should be adequately protected by health and accident insurance.
Intramurals are provided for the enjoyment of the university community
with health and safety a major concern. Each person should be familiar with the
program, policies, regulations, and rules.
Objectives
- To provide ample opportunity for all students, faculty, and staff to participate
in wholesome recreational activity.
- To provide a variety of organized and structured physical activities to be implemented
by the Intramural Sports Program.
- To provide a positive environment that will foster group spirit, enthusiasm, and
loyalty.
- To promote the development of sportmanship, leadership, and fellowship.
- To provide opportunities for individuals to experience new leisure activities.
- To provide opportunities for the individual to improve his or her skills in team
and individual activities.
Sportmanship
- The WCU Intramural Department is committed to preserving the sportsmanship and good
spirit of every contest. In keeping with this committment, the Mike Creason Sportsmanship
Award and 20 Intramural t-shirts will be given to each male and female team
who has consistently dsiplayed good sportsmanship throughout the year.
- The sportsmanship rating system is intended to be an ovjective scale by which
each team's attitude and behavior can be assessed throughout the intramural sports
leagues and playoff seasons. Behavior before, during, and after an intramural sport
contest is included in the rating. The team manager is responsible for educating
and informing all players and spectator's affiliated about the system. To encourage
acceptable conduct, before, during, and after intramural sport contests, officials,
scorekeepers, and/or supervisors shall make decisions whether to warn, penalize,
or eject persons and/or teams for poor sportsmanpersons and/or teams for poor sportsmanship.
Team ratings are : acceptable, unacceptable, and season ending.
- Players thrown out of a game for any reason results in at least a one game suspension.
Fighting and other acts of misconduct may result in more than a one game suspension.
Peanalties are at the discretion of the Director.
- Any player addressing an official in an unsprtsmalike and discourteous mannerdisqualifies
himself immediatly for the remainder of the game and the next game. Baiting and
abusing the umpires will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Pleas remember,
the officials are themselves students in a difficult position doing a thankless
job.
