Eligibility

 All WCU undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff are eligible to compete in Intramural competition with the following exceptions:

  1. Undergraduate students must carry a minimum of six semester hours and graduate students a minimum of two semester hours. Those involved in their internship, co-oping or student teaching will be eligible to participate.

  2. Winners of a WCU varsity sports award or any other four year college or university award shall be ineligible for that sport in which he/she won the award (related sports-baseball and softball, etc.) A varsity award winner may play after eight years have elapsed. Coaches may not participate in the sports they coach unless they are a full-time student.

  3. Any candidate for a varsity, freshman, or reserve squad who is practicing formally with the team is not eligible to participate in like sport. Any candidate who remains on the team past the first game is not eligible for that year. This includes red shirts and transfers.
    a.  Ringer Rule will apply to specific coed activities.  These coed activites include volleyball, flag football, and softball. One varsity lettered athlete may participate per team.
    b.  Ringer Rule will apply to all Intramural team sports which require a maximum of seven or more participants. One varsity lettered athlete may participate per team who no longer is a varsity team member for at least one year. Intramural team sports utilizing this rule are softball, flag football, and outdoor soccer. Individual sport activities are regulated by eligibility rules.

  4. An intramural team is not allowed to have more than two players on their roster who are members of a WCU sport club team in that Intramural sport or a similar sport (i.e. tackle football and flag football).

  5. A student barred from varsity athletics because they were paid as a professional athlete shall be barred for that sport or similar sport.

  6. Any listing of a participant by using a false name will result in disqualification of the participant along with the team captain or team manager responsible for the action.

  7. A team shall forfeit all contests and points earned in each game which it uses an ineligible player. The listing of an ineligible participant or player on a team's roster or score sheet constitutes an ineligible player. Negligence is inexcusable!

  8. In order for a player to be eligible for playoffs, they must be listed on the roster by the end of the regular season.

  9. Players may play with only one team for each activity. Once a name appears on a particular roster that person cannot play for anyone else for any reason. The first line-up of the season constitutes the roster for a team.

  10. Sorority and fraternity participants must be a bonafide pledge/associate or active member of the Western Carolina University chapter of the Greek organization and listed as an active dues paying pledge/associate or member in the Office of Student Affairs. Persons affiliated with a Western Carolina University chapter of the Greek organization are ineligible for "A" league participation. Alumni members of the Greek organization are also ineligible for "A" league participation. Exceptions are dues paying graduate students or undergraduate students who are student teaching, doing internships or co-oping.

  11. Faculty and staff must play only on independent non-point teams. Exception: Women's independent point teams.

  12. The Director and Assistant Director of the Intramural sports program shall be ineligible to participate in Intramural activities except for non-point and coed intramural activities.

  13. Husbands or wives of faculty and staff may participate in team activities as listed: softball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, coed softball, water polo, coed inner tube water polo, and coed volleyball. Individual activities are not available. A fee of $9.00 per semester must previously be paid to the Director. Husbands or wives of students may participate in the same team activities with a fee of $5.00 per semester.
