2005-2006

• Jennifer Gardner (MA English, Professional Writing 2006)
  • The Peace Weaver: Wealhtheow In Beowulf (498kb pdf)
    I directed Jennifer's creative thesis which retells the Beowulf story from Wealhtheow's point of view and includes a critical introduction devoted to discussing the craft of her fiction in relation to current criticism of the poem.
  • "Women and Community: Marginalized Women in Sir Gawain and The Green Knight"
    Jennifer wrote this paper, on the representation of women in SGGK, for my Graduate Medieval Literature seminar. This essay won first place in English at WCU's Fourteenth Annual Graduate Research Symposium.

2004-2005

• Jacob Babb (MA English, Literature 2005)
  • "Walkynge In The Mede:" Chaucerian Gardens and the Recasting of the Edenic Fall" (273kb pdf)
    I directed Jacob's MA thesis which argues that Chaucer manipulates various horticultural traditions (especially Edenic, Hortus Conclusus, and Song of Songs traditions) in order to invert traditional expectations related to the Fall.

  • Honoring Enemies and Amiable Antagonists: Medievalism's Influence on Modern Relationships in the Early Novels of G. K. Chesterton (3.3 mb pdf)
    I directed David's thesis which investigates late nineteenth-century medievalism's influence both on Chesterton's fictional portrayal of "adversarial friendship's" and on Chesterton's own adversarial friendships with contemporaries such as G.B. Shaw.
