Introduction to Automation

Overview of Automation Studio: Pneumatics Module, Electrical Module, AB-PLC Module, and HMI module.

Tags and the Variable Manager

Wiring inputs and outputs

      Lab 1 – Linear Circuit – Automation Studio using AB-PLC Simulator

 

Week 2

 

Continuation of PLC fundamentals using AB-PLC and Automation Studio

Fundamentals of Timers and counters

A-B Timers and counters syntax

       Assignments:  Reference sections from the PLC-E book as needed.

       Complete Lab 2: Four-way Traffic Light

 

Week 3

 

Continuation of A-B PLC applications

PLC development of a drilling/processing system.

        Assignment:  Complete Lab 3:  Drilling Work station System

 

Week 4

 

Introduction to Sequential Function Chart (SFC) programming.

SFC structure and syntax

STEPS and TRANSITIONS

Implementing timers and counters

SFC development in Automation Studio

Using the Guided Mode in Automation Studio

     Assignments:  Read and reference appropriate sections in the SFC Manual

                             (located under the HELP menu in Automation Studio).

 

 

 

Week 5

 

Review of LabView

Data Flow Programming

VI and sub-VI development

Review of NI Automation and Measurement (MAX)

Configuration of the DAQ 6009

      Complete review tutorials of LabView as needed from the San Diego State Site

      Assignment:  Complete Lab 5:  Temperature Monitoring

 

Week 6

 

Introduction to Vernier Sensors and the Vernier DAQ unit

Configuration of the Vernier DAQ

       Assignment:  Lab 6:  Self-directed Lab using LabView and Vernier sensors.

 

Week 7

 

Using non-Vernier sensors.

Configurations

Methods of interfacing

Approaches to measuring, strain, temperature, flow, and pressure.

       Assignment:  Lab 7:  Self-directed sensor lab (non-Vernier) using LabView.

 

Week 8

 

Intro to Mathscript.

Mathscript syntax

LabView procedures for implementing Mathscript

       Assignment:  Lab 8:  System processing and monitoring using LabView and

                             Mathscript.

 

Weeks 9-10:   Training sessions and presentations.


Weeks 12-14:   Project work. Development of system integration, control and monitoring.

 

Week 14:  Final report for project due

                  Project demonstration and presentation.
