LAB # 3
SYSTEM CALCULATIONS USING EXCEL

PURPOSE

This laboratory assignment will provide an opportunity  to understand  the relationships between Force (F), Pressure (P) and Area (A) and to perform required calculations using Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet.  The purpose is to develop guidelines and computational procedures for beginning the semester project.

OBJECTIVES

After completing this laboratory, you should be able to do the following:

1. Develop a layout for a spreadsheet to calculate Pressure, Force, or Area;

1. Develop a layout for a spreadsheet to calculate bore, cap area, and annular area;

2. Identify appropriate formulas and relationships of F, P, A ; bore, area, annular area;
    Flowrate, velocity, area;  Stroke, velocity, time; and FHP.

3. Develop a working spreadsheet for performing calculations (refer to the example shown below);

4. Learn how to deal with "circular reference" errors; using three different approaches.

This laboratory involves the study and observation of a demonstration for performing calculations.  At the end of the
inclass demonstration.  Students will work in teams to begin planning and writing commands in Excel for developing
computational "modules" to satisfy the requirements stated in the semester project.

PROCEDURE

Study the EXCEL example as presented in class and create your own solution for solving the following:

1.  Force, pressure and area

2.  Flowrate,  velocity and area.

3.  Fluid Horse power (assume 85% efficiency).

Use the system covered in Lab 2

Generate an Excel File with calculations for the following:

Note:  Submit an Excel file for Laboratory three.  You do not need to complete a formal write up.  However, provide directions for using your Excel spreadsheet.
