                                    Comparison of Two Different Sized Actuators in a Linear Hydraulic Circuit

The purpose of this exercise is to apply Pascal’s law for a linear hydraulic circuit related to cylinder sizes.  Students should develop an understanding of how a simple linear hydraulic circuit functions and the purpose of each component within the system.

Objectives:  After completing this laboratory exercise, students should be able to achieve the following competencies:

1.    Identify the hydraulic components used in a linear hydraulic circuit;
2.    Understand the function and operation of each component;
3.    Calculate the Cap Area, Rod Area and Annular Area of two different actuators;
4.    Determine the pressure during extension and retraction for two different actuators assuming a constant load;
5.    Present the calculations in a logical and concise table using Excel.
6.    Analyze the differences in pressures between extension and retraction for each actuator and between each actuator.
7.    Summarize the findings in concise statements.

Procedures:

1.  Construct a sketch of a basic linear hydraulic circuit and label each component used in the system.

2.  Using your notes, textbook, and other relevant resources, develop a computer generated schematic using standard ANSI symbols.

3.  Using Excel, develop a spread sheet to calculate the values indicated in the table shown below assuming a constant 1000 lb load:

              Bore   Rod Dia.   Cap Area       Rod Area      Annular Area   Area Ratio    PSI Ext.       PSI  Ret.
Cyl  1        2”         1”          -----               -----               -----               ----               ----              ----

Cyl. 2        4”         2”          -----               -----               -----               ----               ----              ----

4.    Verify your results using a hand calculator.
5.    Compare and analyze the pressure differences between extension and retaction relative to the cap area to annular area ratio.
6.    Compare and analyze the pressure differences between each cylinder based on the relative area ratios.
7.    Complete a two page concise written report using the format that was email to you (provide data results in table format).
8.    Provide appendices for the circuit schematic, hand calculations, and a print out of your Excel spreadsheet.
