I welcome any and all questions about class materials/assignments/etc. If you would like to meet with me, please don’t hesitate to ask. You may email me, phone me, stop by during office hours, or we can set up an appointment.

Exams: All exams will be based on lecture materials, class discussions, reading assignments and listening assignments. Exams may contain short answer, multiple choice, matching, true-false and short essay questions. All exams will include a listening component covering the music studied in class. You will be asked to identify the music and comment on what you are hearing. The written portion of the final exam is not cumulative and will contain only the material presented after the previous exam. However the listening portion of the final exam will be cumulative.

Concert Attendance: During the semester you will attend five concerts, (check the website under “Concert Attendance” for a list of approved concerts). As you enter the concert you will be greeted by a monitor who will swipe your CATcard. You must swipe your card at the beginning and the end of the concert. YOU MUST ATTEND THE ENTIRE CONCERT IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT. If you attend a concert where no monitor is present, you must have a faculty member or performer sign the program and turn it in with your name on it. You are encouraged to attend off-campus concerts, however, you must check with me that the concert is approved and you must present a program and ticket stub in order to receive credit for having attended. For upcoming events check the following webpage:

www.wcu.edu/umf/cal.htm

Concert Attendance for Extra Credit: You may receive one extra percent added to your final grade for each concert attended past the required five. The maximum number of extra points possible is five.

Concert Reviews: For three of the five concerts you attend you will write a paper discussing the event, using what you have learned in class. You may choose which of the concerts you wish to write about, provided they occur before the assignment is due. Guidelines are posted on the website. Late papers will not be accepted.

Quizzes: There will be a wide variety of in-class activities, quizzes, writing assignments, and discussions.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is imperative in order to succeed in this class, it is expected you will be present at all classes. Role will be taken at the beginning of each class.

Section 07 will be allowed two unexcused absences, use these wisely.

Each additional absence will result in a deduction of 2 percent from your final grade. Please arrange your doctor’s appointments, haircuts, car repairs, etc. outside of class time. In the event of illness or serious emergency, notify the instructor in advance. Any quizzes, in class assignments, or exams missed because of an unexcused absence will not be made up. Two tardies equal one absence.

The last day to withdraw from this course and receive a “W” is Wednesday, April 2.

Cell Phone/Electronic Equipment Policy: All cell phones and/or personal electronic devices are to be turned off and put away before class begins.

How to succeed in this class:

#1 BE HERE! The structure of this class, with class listening, group discussions, quizzes and in-class assignments, makes it difficult to succeed when you are not present.

#2 Listen to the music as much as possible: The listening set which accompanies the text is on reserve in the Hunter Library’s listening center (Hunter, mezzanine level). Further listening to the pieces being studied will help you better identify elements of music as well as composers/time periods.  The Curriculum Materials Center is open Monday-Thursday until 10:00 pm. Fridays until 5:00 pm. Saturdays from 10-2 pm and Sundays from 2-10 pm. It is important to do the listening early … if you find there are conflicts over getting to the listening, you may purchase a CD set of your own at the bookstore.

#3 Ask questions! If you don’t understand a term, need to be set up with a tutor or would like some ideas on additional great music to listen to… just ask.

#4 Check out www.mhhe.com/kamien6. This site is tied to your textbook and will be helpful in clarifying terms and concepts.

A more detailed outline of class topics and assignments will be available on the web at:                  http://paws.wcu.edu/acherry
